Who are Only Mums & Dads?

Only Mums, Only Dads and the Family Law Panel are separate but related sites providing access to advice and legal and mediation services for parents going through the separation process.

We have worked with Only Mums and Dads for a long time; in fact they are one of our oldest customers.

Time To Move On

Our project involved migrating our client’s Content Management System (CMS) and taking the opportunity to refresh the brand and restructure the user interface.

“We engaged four companies,” said Director Bob Greig. “What really turned things around were two things: the initial meeting with Richard and when the quotation arrived. It became absolutely clear he had listened carefully. I can’t stress that enough.

“The price was realistic – neither cheap nor expensive – and we felt you were able to grasp what we as clients needed. The client needs to understand what is being said or they feel out of control.”

Design trends and technologies change rapidly in the digital world and while it wouldn’t be practical to react to every little shift, sometimes it makes sense to ring the changes.

With a CMS which was nearing the end of its shelf life, we all agreed that now would be the ideal time for Only Mums and Dads to shake things up to ensure they would stay top of mind for many more years to come.

“What really turned things around were two things: the initial meeting with Richard and when the quotation arrived. It became absolutely clear he had listened carefully. I can’t stress that enough.”

“Our website had become a little bit old and clumsy and had a dated feel about it,” said Bob. “Most of our information is less than 12 month’s old so it looked and felt wrong. So the project was a rebranding and refreshing exercise while retaining much of the content we already had.”

Finding A New Home

With nearly 30 per cent of the top 10 million websites now running on the open source WordPress CMS, this platform was the obvious choice for our clients. However, what many businesses don’t realise is that there is a professional way to manage a site migration which preserves all of the good search engine optimisation (SEO) they will have built over the years.

Vu handled a seamless migration onto WordPress so that Only Mums and Dads would maintain their good web standing as they move forward.

With social signals becoming increasingly prominent in search engine rankings, we also made sure that our client’s Twitter handle and link were prominent on the front page.

The new CMS made it much easier for the company to manage media, something which had been an issue with the old one. “We had real problems uploading videos and photos,” explained Bob. “Uploading these into articles was important to us so we felt a new website would help with that.”

Rest and Refresh

Even loyal visitors to a website can get tired of looking at the same old design so a periodic brand refresh can work wonders for reigniting interest (and attracting new visitors of course).

So while we were busy upgrading things on the inside, we also freshened up the exterior for a bold new look.

“The price was realistic – neither cheap nor expensive – and we felt you were able to grasp what we as clients needed. The client needs to understand what is being said or they feel out of control.”

The Only Mums and Dads and Family Law Panel sites now have a modern blue, green and brown colour scheme respectively. This is cool on the eye; just what you need if you’re feeling upset or stressed.

We have also used plenty of white breathing space; large, easy to read fonts and clear signposting throughout.

The new brand needed to span three elements and create a reassuring but friendly voice to those in need.

With a wealth of resources to offer and multiple agency partners, it is no wonder that the existing Only Mums and Dads site had become a little cluttered.

To improve user experience we made some big changes including the division of resources into clearly labelled topics, people and featured articles for quick and easy access.

The content is displayed in simple, intuitive boxes following popular flat design principles. We also separating out our client’s partner links by adding their logos to a slowly scrolling slider on the bottom.

With the client disillusioned with stock imagery we needed to create interesting layouts with font sizes, colours and iconography.

For improved brand consistency, we have made it easy to switch between the Only Mums and Dads sites through a simple text link and also added a prominent ‘quick exit’ button for enhanced confidentiality.

Sticking Together!

We’re pleased that Only Mums and Dads will be taking advantage of Vu’s continued digital marketing support services.

“I find the whole team approachable,” said Bob. “You always come back to us and give us an accurate timescale. I feel you’re very honest when you tell us if something is going to take only a few minutes or a lot longer. If we had a problem, I feel we could pick up the phone and talk it through.

“I don’t think we would get anything better. If it’s working well, why change?”
